Severe Toothache While Traveling in Japan

Emergency Dental Care in Osaka – Yanagida Dental Clinic

Are you visiting Osaka and suddenly experiencing a severe toothache?

A painful tooth can make it difficult to eat, sleep, or enjoy your trip. Dental emergencies can happen unexpectedly, even while you are traveling abroad.

At Yanagida Dental Clinic, we welcome international visitors and provide dental care in English.

What Causes a Severe Toothache?

Severe tooth pain can have several causes, including:

  • Deep tooth decay: A large cavity may reach the nerve inside your tooth and cause intense pain.

  • Dental infection: An infection around the root of a tooth may cause pain, swelling, or an abscess.

  • Cracked or broken teeth: A damaged tooth may become painful when biting or chewing.

  • Wisdom tooth problems: Inflammation or infection around a wisdom tooth may cause pain and swelling.

A dental examination and X-ray may be necessary to identify the cause of your pain.

What Should You Do If You Have a Severe Toothache?

If you develop a severe toothache while traveling in Japan, we recommend the following:

1. Contact a dentist as soon as possible.

Severe or persistent tooth pain should not be ignored, even if it temporarily improves after taking painkillers.

2. Avoid chewing on the painful side.

Try to eat soft foods and avoid very hot, cold, or sweet foods if they make your pain worse.

3. Take pain medication if appropriate.

Over-the-counter pain relievers may provide temporary relief. Always follow the medication instructions and check with a healthcare professional if you are unsure whether a medicine is safe for you.

4. Do not delay treatment if you have swelling.

Swelling of the gums or face may indicate a dental infection that requires prompt attention.

If you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, or rapidly increasing facial swelling, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Emergency Root Canal Treatment in Osaka

If your toothache is caused by inflammation or infection inside the tooth, root canal treatment may be necessary.

At Yanagida Dental Clinic, Dr. Yanagida will examine your tooth and explain the available treatment options.

Depending on your condition, emergency treatment may include:

  • Local anesthesia to help manage pain during treatment

  • Removing inflamed or infected tissue from inside the tooth

  • Cleaning and disinfecting the root canals

  • Placing medication inside the canals when appropriate

  • Sealing the tooth with a temporary filling

The aim of emergency root canal treatment is to relieve pain, control infection, and preserve the tooth whenever possible.

Please note: Root canal treatment often requires additional appointments. If you are visiting Japan for a short period, you may need to continue treatment with your regular dentist after returning home.

What If the Tooth Cannot Be Saved?

In some cases, a severely damaged or infected tooth cannot be preserved.

If extraction is necessary, Dr. Yanagida will explain the procedure and treatment costs before proceeding.

Whenever possible, we aim to preserve your natural teeth.
